Displacement Mapping

Displacement Mapping is a technique that uses a texture or height map to cause an effect to the geometric position of the points of a mesh at render time. Each points over the texture surface is displaced according to the evaluation of the texture function, the displacement often occurs in the local surface normal.

One of the advantages of this technique is it adds depth and detail. On the other hand, it is costly as it adds more geometric points.
